The tiles make more sense in groups

A Pai Gow set has 32 tiles. Most designs appear twice, which creates the matched pairs. The two Gee Joon tiles look different but form the highest pair together.

What to learn first

Do not rank tiles by dot count

The single-tile order is symbolic. Teen, the 12-dot tile, ranks first. Day, the 2-dot tile, ranks second. That is why a printed chart is more useful than trying to infer the order.

The red and white pip colours help identify a tile but do not change its point value.

Where to go next

Once you can recognize Teen, Day and Gee Joon, learn the scoring order. You do not need to memorize every traditional name before playing a practice hand.
